How I met Steve Jobs

I first met Steve when I was somewhere between 6 and 8 years old. I don't remember the exact age and like many of my memories from that age I recall specific moments and feelings without full detail of the timeline or events. I met Steve in the form of one flavor of his Apple II (the IIc if I remember correctly) and it was an astounding and important day.

That Apple II was a hand me down from my grandfather to my father - A Christmas present and it rocked! It really was as if a whole new world opened up before me. It wasn't the first computer I had every used. I believe that was the tape drive driven machine we had a school and the Commodore 64 my friend had on which we played games. But it was the first computer in our household and the first one I bonded with. Really the first one I "used", even if the thing I remember the most was using it to play countless hours of Load Runner. It made an impact.

Fast forward to College for me. I went to the Rhode Island School of Design in the mid to late 90's, graduating in 1997. I was rockin' a Macintosh SE complete with a full squadron of flying toasters and primarily using it for Email. This was the time when Steve and Apple were on a break but he would find me again nonetheless. In 1995 I met Steve again. A talking Cowboy and his Spaceman buddy re-introduced us. Toy Story blew my art school mind. I had always been a huge animation and Disney fan (a natural extension for a comic book geek) and this was like nothing I had ever seen. As I started to learn about Pixar, I got to know Steve a bit better.

After graduation I landed my first big job doing a ton of illustration work for Met-Life and from those profits I started my own Company (INNFUSION) and was beyond excited to buy a top of the line, state of the art Powerbook 3400c with a ginormous 20" external monitor. With this, I learned Photoshop and Illustrator and my creative world exploded. Professional projects had typically involved spending hours upon hours at Kinko's doing basic image manipulation or creating copies to provide to clients. No longer! This amazing technology enabled me and my fledgeling enterprise to work with anyone, anywhere on anything. It is only as a result of this that my company has been able to exist in this decentralized way for me for almost 15 years. Without these tools I would have a completely different career. I've got Steve to thank for that.

Steve and I stayed in touch over the following years as he came triumphantly back to Apple and I moved to California. We touched base as I moved onto G3 and then G4 towers, a 12" Macbook, my first iPod and more. The "Stevenotes" became a must-see part of my year and I started to pick up what Steve was putting down, seeing the picture he was painting. I was in (still am) hook, line and sinker.

The next time I really met Steve was in Valdosta, GA. I was driving cross country with my Brother, taking him to college in Florida. It was 2007 and we built in a day to stop to see Steve. We spent the day waiting with quite a few others, waiting at an AT&T store until the official 5PM release of the first iPhone. As my brother and I opened the box I felt what it was like for Gollum to finally get ahold of the One Ring again. It was beautiful. Magical. This device, this Star-Trek future that had been dreamt about for decades, a computer in the palm of my hand, it existed. It was real. Wow.

My brother and I spent most of the trip switching off between driving and iPhone-ing. Looking back on that, in my lifetime, in my generation we had the equivalent of replacing or horse drawn carriage with our first car. At this point I can't imagine not having these magical devices. They empower my work, provide me with information and connection to friends and loved ones, and are a pleasure to touch and use. I'm not just an Apple Kool-Aid drinker, I serve it everywhere I go.

These meetings with Steve have become a daily occurrence, of course, as I'm typing right now on my Macbook Pro having already read and responded to emails this morning on my iPhone 4 and will go to another meeting this afternoon with my iPad 2.

His legacy and impact on and for the world is well documented and irrefutable. His legacy on and for me is one that will live on in my briefcase and on my desk, in my pocket, in my heart and in my desire and ambition to do and create the insanely great.

My world is a much better one for having had Steve in it.

The most emotionally inspiring ad every made could not be more applicable...

The comic weaves between and alongside events of the first and second film. At times, it can become a little bit confusing as we are thrown overseas to follow the MacManus brothers in all their bearded avenging glory. Despite a few too many coinciding storylines, I loved how much chaos and despicable human nature is jampacked into this book. At times it's a little much and the story can take a backseat to the chaotic pace of the violence, but that’s what the Saints are all about."

Lot's of Boondock Saints 2 Awesomeness!

Boondock Comics Co-Writer, J.B. Love and I rocked out at the Hollywood Premiere last night. We had been fortunate enough to see an early cut of the flick (which was good) but damn Troy, C.B. and Company really kicked ass on this sequel. The final cut is absolutely frickin' awesome or to put it in Boondock terms it is Mother Fucking Bad Ass and all Boondock Fans (old and new) will absolutely LOVE IT. There's also a secret new ending which will absolutely rock your socks off!

Here's a shot from the premier - you can see Julie Benz a little ways down the red carpet...

BTW - Julie is absolutely stunning in person. Just as beautiful and awesome in the flesh as on the screen.

We hung out with Sean Flanery for a couple minutes after the flick (what a ridiculously nice guy) and chatted with C.B. and Troy for a moment as well. - Again guys, CONGRATS and Kick Ass! You made a killer flick!

Underdog cult hit "The Boondock Saints" took its time finding an audience before it came to to DVD, but now the religiously charged crime drama starring "Spider-Man" villain Willem Dafoe looks to be spawning a sequel film, as well as a comic book prequel. "Scottish funnyman Billy Connolly is set to become a comic-book character.

The Glasgow-born comedian will appear as an assassin called “Il Duce” in the series of comics to come out with the film Boondock Saints II, released later this year.

The world-famous comedian played the same character in the cult 1999 original Boondock Saints.

He said: “I like careering around shooting people and murdering people – I don’t think I would like to do it in my life, but it’s a great chance to pretend."

This weekend I attended an amazing and awesome (do you get that I liked it) event - ChangeUp: LA.

From the ChangeUp Site : "ChangeUp: LA is an intense, community event with the goal of making great strides toward improving the effectiveness of five non-profit organizations.

In one weekend, a few dozen design, marketing, and web professionals will meet with representatives from the five organizations. The organizations will present their design challenges (a new brochure, updated branding, a website refresh, etc.) and the participants will form groups and work to complete the projects... all by the end of the weekend!"

Well, that is EXACTLY what happened!
It was wonderful to be a part of such a dynamic, diverse and talented group of creative professionals and the smaller group that I played with in particular, a veritable dream team of creative expertise and ability, was truly a pleasure to work with on every level.

So, what did we do? We worked with a tremendous non-profit called CADRE.

From the Cadre Site : "CADRE is a community-based, membership parent organization in South Los Angeles founded in 2001. CADRE is led by African American and Latino parents and caregivers whose children attend local schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). We work for systemic change by supporting grassroots South LA parents as the leaders in stopping the pushout crisis in schools serving low-income neighborhoods of color."

They came to change up seeking a new image and brand that could take their mission and make is something that can be instantly and easily communicated while at the same time providing a look and feel that will be effective as a rallying cry for the parents that work with them. The representatives from Cadre were passionate, extremely engaged and tremendous to work with (May I suggest adding to your available services : "How to be the perfect client".)

Here's a grab of their current web site which is indicative of what their brand and marketing materials looked like coming into the weekend :

Our team was blessed with a client that was completely open to rebuilding this brand from the ground up and we took full advantage of that opportunity. For our deliverables we created two distinct approaches to the brand in the form of two brand style guides.

This gives Cadre the ability to take these two approaches back to their community to pick the one that resonates the most with their membership. Additionally they now have the tools to work with other designers and ensure a high end look and feel consistent with whichever new brand direction they move forward with.

Like so many others, I became a Betty Fan in part due to Dave Stevens fantastic work on The Rocekteer and then discovered a babe like no other in picture books and others drawings and works. She is the best of the best to draw - able to capture the perfect combination of naughty and nice all wrapped up in a perfect package. She will always be my ideal. Bettie passed away a couple days ago - She will be missed. . .
